Ideas for Remodelling Your Kitchen

Avery Shaw

If you're remodelling your kitchen, you have many things to consider regarding the layout and materials. To help you create a beautiful and functional space, consider the following ideas.

Natural Light

One way to make a kitchen feel roomier is to open up the room to more natural light. You could expand the windows. Another possibility is to install a skylight. A skylight captures more light than a similar size vertical window, which usually receives reflected light from the ground and buildings. Sunlight flowing from above is often more direct. You could install a diffuser to spread soft and even light around the area. Another way to open up the kitchen to the outdoors is to construct a splashback window. An elongated window will create a unique look in your kitchen while making it brighter.

Kitchen Island

A kitchen island is a great way to increase the aesthetics and functionality of a kitchen. You could create a feature of the island by painting the cabinetry in a contrasting colour to the wall cupboards. For instance, if the other cabinets are pale grey, install navy island cabinets. Similarly, you can contrast the benchtop material. For example, you may not wish to pay for granite benches around the entire kitchen. However, you could fit it on the kitchen island only and install cream laminate around the rest of the room.

A kitchen Island can also help create a functional kitchen by allowing you to develop efficient spacing between the fridge, the sink, and the stovetop — often termed the kitchen triangle. If these work stations are too far away from each other, you can walk many unnecessary steps when working in the kitchen. Too close together, and the kitchen can become crowded if more than one person is cooking at once. Of course, an island provides additional storage and countertop area.

Artificial Lighting

Natural light does create a welcoming feel in custom kitchens, but artificial lighting is just as important. One central globe won't illuminate all areas of the room consistently, and your body may cast a shadow over the benchtop. To make the kitchen more functional, install several recessed lights across the ceiling so that the entire room bathes in soft and even lighting. Additionally, you could connect under cabinet lights so that the benchtop area is easy to see. Don't forget to install gorgeous pendant lights to add decorative accents to the decor.

If you want a custom kitchen, talk to a contractor in your area.
